DEALING WITH PET ALLERGIES
Contrary to what you may think, it is possible to live with a pet that you are allergic to. I read an article recently by Dr. Daniel More who said that there are effective ways to control allergy symptoms without having to part company with your dog or cat. The person with allergies will likely still have some symptoms (runny nose or itchy eyes), but using avoidance techniques will help to minimize most of the symptoms. Obviously, if there are severe symptoms such as asthma it will be more difficult. There are individual circumstances to consider.
The following are a list of avoidance techniques which will help to reduce exposure to pet allergens and thus help to minimize the symptoms:
1. Neuter your pet.
2. Bath the pet at least once or twice a week.
3. Wipe down the pet with a damp cloth.
4. Remove the pet from the bedroom.
5. Keep the pet outside, in the garage, or in an uncarpeted room in the house.
6. Vacuum frequently (suggest an HEPA-equipped vacuum.
While some very allergic individuals (especially those with asthma) may not be able to keep their pet regardless what they do, many people find that these suggestions allow them to keep their pets.
If you are buying a new home that has had pets, the following measures will be helpful:
1. Steam clean all carpets.
2. Dry clean the curtains.
3. Vacuum all floors.
4. Wipe down all hard surfaces.
5. Replace HVAC filters.
